If the Internet was Patented

Keeping with my Tim Berners-Lee theme, I was curious to see what people believed would have happened if he had patent the web. I was expecting some very large dollar amount to pop up but instead found this article which explained how different the world may be if the web was patented. In fact, if it had been patented, it would just now be coming out of patent coverage. The author of the article, Mike Masnick, feels the patenting of the web would change our lives all the way down to smart phones and a possible non existent Google. It is very interesting to think of the possible outcomes of the web being patented and I think this article is a good read so check it out!

Tim Berners-Lee : The internet is key to innovation

In class we discussed the reason why differnet people who have helped develop the internet haven't charged for their ideas and advancements. I found this video on youtube of Tim Berners-Lee discussing how he feels the internet is a key source to drive innovation amongst its users.

He says when CERN decided to not charge people to link up to the internet it helped the "openness" of the internet. When asked if he thinks the rate of internet innovation will slow down he is confident in saying no, it will do just the opposite and the idea of it leveling off is "a little crazy".

This video is actually quite interesting and i would definitely recommend watching! It is nice to be able to match a name with a face.
